Library Importance
Libraries are important to my classmates and me for many reasons. Click here for results of my survey as typed by students. These include:
- They provide reading material for enjoyment and reference books for study.
- Many libraries have computers for research and gaming.
- During SMART lunch (an hour long lunch time at Charles D. Owen High School in which students can eat, relax, do make-up work, and socialize) the library is a quiet center for reading, eating, playing board games, and using the computers.
- The relaxed atmosphere of libraries is often quiet and sedate, as opposed to other chaotic, noisy gathering places in schools and communities.
- Librarians are often kind and funny, adding to the atmosphere. Additionally, librarians are invaluable in the search for books, in making book recommendations, and in assisting with research.
- Libraries support teachers implementing the new Common Core curriculum by providing necessary reading excerpts among other things.
- Some libraries have student enrichment areas such as Charles D. Owen Middle School's student computer coding area.
- Buncombe County Schools' libraries have "maker spaces" where students can design and create various artistic and robotic projects of their own interests. One impressive example is the Enka High School Maker Space.
"Libraries are important to me because they provide books that do not require payment. If I had to buy all of the books I've read, I don't know what I would do." Ella, age 11
